Act 1 Scenes 3 and 4 Discussions about Culture

In the first scene, Rita wrote an essay on one auhtor but with almost total reference to another author, also Frank noticed that her essay was really short. So he decided to tell Rita a story of the theology teacher, in order to make her realize that a clever and short answer is not necessarily the correct answer. In a way he tried to explained her that she had to span a bit more her essays and devote more time to do it, applying all the information that she had.
When Rita said "it makes me stronger coming here", I think that she would feel better by acquiring knowledge about culture in general, maybe she felt more secure than before coming to the lessons.Apart from that, she made comments about social issues, such as violence and economic problems as well that affected people's everyday life.
By the end of the two scenes Rita has learned mainly that she was able to write essays by taking into account Frank's advices. Also that she could put into practice her previous knowledge to perform the activities in the lessons.

Why aren't Rita's answers "correct", Ro? Who decides what's "correct" at school?

If you'll allow me to speak my own voice here, I don't think Rita's feeling "stronger" thanks to the knowledge about the academic world she might be getting. I think she's getting to know herself better, and that's soooo empowering...

Now, I'm positive you can come up with more ideas about things Rita has learned so far. Won't you share them with us all? :-(

Sleep tight!

Rita's answers were incorrect because she made reference to another author. I think that in the past the only person who decided was the teacher, but nowaday it is a contribution from the teacher, headmister, parents and students.
Rita has learned many things conected with every day life, such as that another social class exits, apart from the working- class which surrounds her. She also learned refering to literature and how reading material would affect her life in some way.

Hey, Romina! Rita was clearly aware of the existence of other social classes well before starting her lessons with Frank. Indeed, that was one of her reasons for deciding to give it a try..

Now, I really like your ideas on multiple voices in today's educational communities... We'll come back to this later in our course, so bear it in mind!

Love,
Gladys
