Rita says that the course is providing her with life itself. With this expression she wants to demonstrate how important is the course for her. On the other hand, her husband thinks really different from her,he burnt all her books because he does not want her to continue with her studies. However, she thinks that the situation with the books does not matter to her because she has the knowledge "inside her head".
Rita does not want to go to the pub with frank because she discovers that he stopped being a poet because of his adiction problem, in a way she wants to help him to stop drinking.
Frank is so reluctant to go to see the production of The Importance of Being Earnest, not because it is amateur, it was because he prefered going to the pub instead. In spite of that, he thinks Julia would be jealous if he goes to the theatre with Rita.

I believe you trust their words too much, Romina!
Let's see:
1. What was Denny really trying to "burn" when he burnt Rita's books?
2. Frank drinks in his office too, so can that be the reason why she refuses to go to the pub with him? And do you really believe he stopped writing poetry because of his addiction? Or might something else have caused both things instead?
3. Considering Rita has already refused to go to the pub, why won't Frank consider seeing the amateur performance? If Julia's feelings are the issue, wouldn't she be hurt if they went to the pub together as well? Now, he doesn't mind that, does he?
Food for thought!
Gladys
I think that Denny tried to stop Rita going on with her course, with her actual, social life and her relationship with frank.
I think that Rita refused to go to the pub with Frank because of his adiction problem and also because she realized that another kind of relationship is happening between the two of them.Or maybe, she thinks that he could not control himself in another place outside his "room". Or the other way round.
In some way, I think that both consider their own couples when taking some decisions.
Too many questions Gladys!!!!
Look at the bright side of it, Romina: by learning to cope with so many questions, and giving up on expecting to find the right answer to them all, you're certainly learning to live with ambiguity and diversity!
8-P,
Gladys
